New Orleans
The smells of Cajun cooking, the infectious rhythms
of jazz, the colors of Mardi Gras...is there any city
in the United States that combines the excitement of
life like New Orleans?
Walk the French quarter, stroll along the river, tour
the graveyards, and listen to hot jazz, from one of
its birthplaces. The visitor is faced with a
dizzying array of activities.
On a cold February morning, I got a cup of hot
chicory coffee with an obligatory order of sugary
white beignets from the landmark stop, Cafe Du
Monde. Taking it with me to a small bench in
front of the market, I sat and began the meal. Almost
on que, my requiebros occurred. An impromptu
jazz trio of a bass, guitar, and sax appeared before
me and proceed to serenade my meal. For the next
thirty minutes, the world centered on that bench
as the music melted with the rich coffee and
sweets.
